Updated September 4, 2026: Hornady has introduced VEXIS, a patent-pending palm-vein recognition system for firearm safes, bedside lockboxes, vault doors and compatible lock upgrades. The company says the contactless reader can identify an enrolled user in under half a second while keeping biometric data inside the device.
The Hornady VEXIS palm-vein safe system is a notable shift from the fingerprint readers commonly used on quick-access storage. It also deserves a careful reading. Speed, capacity and privacy figures in the launch materials are manufacturer claims; the announcement does not cite an independent laboratory certification for the biometric performance. A strong storage decision still depends on the entire safe, installation, backup access and household practices—not one sensor.
How the Hornady VEXIS palm-vein system works
VEXIS uses near-infrared light to read the vein pattern beneath a user’s palm. Unlike a fingerprint reader, the hand does not need to touch the sensor. Hornady says the system evaluates more than 2.5 million data points per scan, supports as many as 10 enrolled users and stores access data locally rather than uploading it or connecting it to an outside service.
Hornady also includes keypad access and a mechanical-key backup, allowing the products to be used with more than one authentication method. The company describes palm patterns as stable through adulthood and says the scanner completes recognition in less than half a second.
Those specifications come from Hornady’s September 2 announcement, not a third-party guarantee for every environment or possible attack. The United Kingdom’s National Cyber Security Centre notes that vein patterns are harder to observe passively than surface biometrics, but it also says performance varies by implementation and independent testing remains limited.
Four VEXIS product groups were announced
The launch covers several storage formats rather than one safe. The VEXIS Night Guard is a bedside unit with a spring-assisted drawer, 14-gauge steel enclosure, keypad and key backup. Hornady lists an integrated USB-C charging port and a dimmable clock display.
The modular Mobilis line includes single-door, double-door and double-door MAX configurations. Hornady says these models use 9-gauge steel, pry-resistant doors, interior power and a one-hour fire-protection design rated to 2,300 degrees Fahrenheit. The company also announced two premium vault-door sizes with 12-gauge steel, 16 locking bolts and reversible hinges.
A separate upgrade kit replaces a compatible safe’s keypad and swingbolt with the VEXIS components. Hornady publishes a compatibility list for first-generation Mobilis models and several common lock patterns. Its product page cautions that an incompatible mounting arrangement may require a qualified locksmith and verification that the door remains secure. That is an important limit: an access-control upgrade should not weaken the lock or enclosure it is intended to protect.
What palm-vein access may improve
Contactless scanning could address some familiar fingerprint-reader frustrations. A palm provides a larger target, the pattern is below the skin, and the user does not have to place one finger on a small surface in precisely the same way each time. Local template storage also avoids the routine need to send access data to a cloud account.
Fast access can be useful only when it remains reliable and restricted to authorized adults. Readers should look for performance under realistic conditions, including changes in hand position, room lighting and expected temperature. They should also verify how the device signals failed attempts, handles low power and recovers after battery replacement or a power interruption.
National Institute of Standards and Technology guidance for digital identity systems does not certify this product, but it offers useful evaluation concepts. NIST treats false-match rate, presentation-attack detection and limits on repeated failed attempts as important biometric controls. A consumer-safe manufacturer may use a different framework, yet buyers can still ask whether equivalent data or independent test results are available.
A biometric reader does not make the whole safe secure
A lock is only one layer. Enclosure strength, hinges, locking hardware, mounting and resistance to removal all affect security. A portable box that opens reliably can still be carried away if it is not secured as intended. A full-size safe with an advanced reader can still be compromised by poor installation or careless control of its backup key.
Backup credentials require the same discipline as the primary method. Mechanical keys should not be left where a child, visitor or unauthorized person can find them, and keypad codes should not be reused or casually shared. Owners should review enrolled users when household access changes and test every authorized method periodically without leaving the safe open or unattended.
Hornady’s product materials also state that loaded firearms should not be stored in its safes or lockboxes and advise users to follow applicable storage laws. Why independent performance data will matter
Hornady’s launch makes strong statements about accuracy, reliability and resistance to copying. The underlying approach has credible advantages: a vein pattern is not normally left on objects like a fingerprint, and capturing it requires specialized infrared imaging. That does not mean every palm-vein implementation has identical security.
The NCSC cautions that palm, finger and wrist-vein technologies are different and that broad claims about the entire category can be misleading. For VEXIS specifically, useful follow-up information would include measured false-accept and false-reject rates, test population size, environmental conditions, lockout behavior and independent evaluation of presentation-attack resistance.
This is especially relevant in a market where biometric failures can have serious consequences. Gun Place has previously reported on the BBRKIN biometric safe recall, which involved fingerprint locks that could admit unauthorized users. That recall does not imply the same defect exists in VEXIS; it illustrates why product-specific testing matters more than the word “biometric.”
What buyers should verify
Before choosing any biometric storage product, buyers should compare the enclosure and lock specifications with their actual use case, confirm how the unit is anchored, and understand the backup-access procedure. For an upgrade kit, they should verify exact mechanical compatibility rather than assuming a common-looking keypad will fit.
Owners should also test access after enrollment, again after installation and periodically afterward. The goal is not simply the fastest opening in a demonstration. It is dependable access for authorized adults alongside effective denial of access to everyone else.
Bottom line
Hornady VEXIS brings a less common biometric method into a broad firearm-storage lineup, with local data storage, contactless scanning and multiple backup options. It is a meaningful product-development story for the Gun Place News Product & Technology section.
The launch specifications are promising, but independent performance data would make the security case stronger. Buyers should judge VEXIS as a complete storage system—reader, lock, steel, mounting, power and backup controls—rather than treating palm-vein recognition as a substitute for responsible storage practices.
